U.S.
Policy Towards Indonesia and Tsunami-Afflicted Countries
Featuring:
Ambassador Marie T. Huhtala, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau
of East Asian
and Pacific Affairs, U.S. Department of State
Wednesday, February 2, 2005 · 12:00– 2:00pm
Held at Asia Society and Museum, 725 Park Avenue at 70th Street,
New York City
Overview:
The United States, along with the rest of the world, has responded
in a major way to the tsunami disaster in South and Southeast
Asia. The State Department reaction was virtually immediate
and the United States has currently pledged $350 million
in disaster relief, while providing critical equipment to help
provide for the needy in the early stages of the crisis. As
the impacted countries move forward, what are the next steps
that need to be taken? What are U.S. plans for dealing
with needs now, three months from now, six months from now? How
has the tsunami impacted U.S. policies and relations with countries
in the region? Please join us for a briefing on these and
other issues with Ambassador Huhtala, who has recently returned
from a tour of the afflicted region.
