Case Study: Inchon Metropolitan City/Media Valley Inc. Road Show Visit to New York City
July, 1999
In early 1999, KWR began to engage in comprehensive discussions with Inchon Metropolitan City (IMC) and Media Valley, Inc. (MV) to plan a "road show" visit to New York City. The first step involved undertaking a detailed review of existing materials on IMC, MV and competing large-scale technology-oriented infrastructure projects in Asia and surveying potentially interested parties by telephone. KWR then prepared a proposal combining targeted outreach with culturally-oriented activities designed to build goodwill, and to create greater awareness of Inchon's potential among targeted audiences with an interest in technology, infrastructure development and international trade and investment in Korea.
After negotiations with IMC and MV, KWR traveled to Korea in April, 1999. The program was refined further to match the interests and concerns of IMC and MV with the requirements and preferences of international journalists, investors, executives and other key individuals. A contract was approved and IMC/MV/KWR began to implement the program that had been developed.
KWR secured Town Hall for IMC - an intimate, landmark theater in the Times Square area of Manhattan - and the services of a producer with decades of experience organizing international musical and dance performances. The Inchon City Dance Company was retained to perform as a gesture of appreciation for "Korean War Veterans and the Parents of Adopted Korean Children". Working closely with IMC, The Korea Society, Daewoo Corporation, Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the USA (KOCHAM) and The Korea Times were enlisted as sponsors and advertisers. Promotional materials, including posters and postcards, were designed for the New York performance, as well as another in Philadelphia. About 3,000 postcards were mailed to individuals with a known interest in dance and Korea-oriented activities. Additionally, approximately 1,500 posters were displayed in Korean-American and other neighborhoods in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut though students recruited for this purpose and arrangements with a wide range of Korean-oriented and Korean trade, business and cultural organizations and veteran's chapters.
KWR also conducted extensive outreach to dance and other culturally oriented journalists, Korean War Veterans, Korean trade, business and community associations and Korean Adoption networks as well. To build new relationships, KWR also invited several hundred business and financial-oriented journalists, city government officials, investors and academics and executives with expertise in technology, real estate, infrastructure development and other relevant industries. These individuals were also invited to attend an investment seminar concerning Inchon/Media Valley on the next day and the most attractive prospects were forwarded brochures and other information concerning the Tri-Port project to entice their interest and to familiarize them with this initiative.
Given the importance of audiences within Korea and the potential to entice investment, talent and cooperation from the Korean-American community, KWR also conducted extensive outreach to Korean-language journalists. This was deemed to be especially important as the prospect of IMC/MV attracting international investment also has a positive effect on domestic transactions due to its ability to introduce greater competition and to raise its profile with domestic firms and improve the general terms of investment. Fort this reason, KWR organized a Korean language press conference for approximately one dozen local journalists and national correspondents on July 14, 1999. It arranged for Commissioner Michael Handy to deliver a proclamation from New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Mayor Choi, Ki-Sun of Inchon Metropolitan City, Dr. Kim Kihwan, Chairman and CEO of Media Valley, Inc. and Vincent Krepps, Editor of The Graybeards, a national Korean War Veteran Association publication also spoke and answered questions. Many favorable articles subsequently appeared in the Korean media.
Following this press conference, which began at 16:30, many reporters and other individuals representing Korean War veterans groups, Korean adoption networks, Korean companies and associations, the local Korean-American community, investors, executives, academics, government officials, the military and other individuals joined Mayor Choi at a VIP reception. At this 18:00 event, the selected guest socialized and listened to brief presentations by Mayor Choi, Vincent Krepps, representatives of Korean War Veterans groups and Korean adoption networks. Many attendees, including a former Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, noted that they had been sincerely moved by this reception, particularly the presentations of a certificate to the Mayor by one veteran's group, and the pictures taken with the Mayor and adopted Korean children.
At 19:30, the reception was adjourned and the VIP guests proceeded to the dance performance. Many guests were already seated in the theater and a few moments after 20:00 an announcer introduced the Inchon City Dance Group to an audience of approximately 1,200 individuals. Two U.S. military officers active in the development of the U.S. Department of Defense's 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the Korean War participated, bringing maps, posters, exhibits and commemorative buttons, which were displayed at the entrance and distributed to participants.
The performance began on an enthusiastic note and the audience -- including many veterans groups who arrived in uniform -- remained engaged throughout the performance, including the brief speeches and comments delivered by Mayor Choi, Ambassador Gregg and KWR president Keith W. Rabin. KWR continues to receive telephone calls for several weeks from attendees -- expressing their thanks and stating that they had never seen a better dance performance.
The following morning, July 15th, at 8:30, registration began for the Inchon/Media Valley investment seminar. A little after 9:00, KWR President Keith W. Rabin introduced the Chairman of the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the USA, Mr. Young Man Kim, who introduced Mayor Choi to an audience that grew to approximately 75 people over the course of the morning. After Mayor Choi's welcoming comments, Inchon Metropolitan City and Media Valley delivered overview presentations. Following a brief coffee break, Mr. T.W. Kang, a noted management expert, delivered a transitional presentation entitled "Working with Korean Firms: Opportunities and Potential".
Mr. Nigel Holloway, Deputy Editor of Forbes Global magazine, then moderated a panel discussion. It included Dr. Robert Hormats, Vice Chairman of Goldman Sachs International (speaking on The Economic Revival of Asia), Mr. Willem Villet, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Asia of The Dames and Moore Group (Inchon's Infrastructural Environment), Dr. Scott MacDonald, Chief Economist & Director of Investor Relations of KWR International (Political and Economic Trends in Korea), Danny Lam, Director, Fisher-Holstein, Inc. (The Strategic Location of Inchon and Media Valley) and Wilbur L. Ross, Jr., Executive Managing Director, Rothschild, Inc. (Prospects for Foreign Investment in Korea).
The seminar concluded, featuring a luncheon keynote address by Dr. Kim Kihwan. In the afternoon, many attendees participated in one-on-one meetings with Inchon/Media Valley officials. At the same time, KWR arranged for Mayor Choi, Dr. Kim Kihwan and one of the panelists to be interviewed by the Journal of Commerce and the EE Times (Electronic Engineering Times).
On Friday, July 16th, the visit concluded with a series of one-on-one meetings. A small group of Inchon City and Media Valley officials, including Mayor Choi and Dr. Kim Kihwan, visited three of the largest investment banks in New York, Bear Stearns, Salomon Smith Barney and Morgan Stanley. Another group visited officials from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The day concluded with two press appointments. Mayor Choi and Dr. Kim Kihwan were interviewed by Businessweek, and had tea with several editors and Vice Chairman Christopher Forbes of Forbes Magazine.
Following the visit, KWR has maintained contact with key individuals, including the journalists from the EE Times and the Journal of Commerce, to help them write their stories. It also helped IMC/MV to prepare thank you notes to all individuals who had at-tended the seminar as well as those who expressed interest in the Tri-Port project.
In addition to almost all New York area-based Korean publications, press coverage appeared in The Resident, a local Connecticut newspaper, The Register in the U.K., The Graybeards, Korean-American Science and Technology News, Korea Economic Reader, the EE Times and the Journal of Commerce. Many other publications, which were unable to attend, have nevertheless expressed a sincere interest and have asked KWR to keep them informed of IMC/MV-related events in the future. More than one has inquired about visiting IMC/MV in Korea and participating in a press tour if one is organized.
