Scott B. MacDonald
Senior Consultant - Research and Investor Services
Dr. Scott B. MacDonald serves as a senior consultant at KWR International, Inc. (KWR); a firm specializing in the delivery of research, communications, consulting and advisory services for public and private sector clients. Concurrently, he serves as Director of Research at Aladdin Capital, a Connecticut-based fund management firm that invests in fixed income securities. Previously he served as Chief Economist and Director of Investor Relations at KWR. Prior to that position he was the Director of Sovereign Research for Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette from 1995 to 1998 and the Sovereign Analyst for Credit Suisse First Boston from 1993-1995. Institutional Investor Magazine rated him as the second best sovereign analyst on its All-America Fixed Income Research Team in 1996, 1997 and 1998 and the third best in 1995. He was also rated third for analysis of Canadian sovereign bonds by the same institution in 1997.
During his tenure on Wall Street, Dr. MacDonald worked closely with a number of banks in Asia, Europe and Latin America. While at Credit Suisse First Boston, he worked closely with Korean Development Bank in its issuance of debt in 1993 and 1994. At Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ), he worked closely with BLADEX (a Latin American trade finance bank) and Spanish, French and Italian banks. His duties included running investor conferences for Spanish and Italian commercial banks and Latin American multilateral development banks as well as helping to set up one-on-one meetings with investors.
Prior to working on Wall Street, Dr. MacDonald worked for five years (1988-1993) with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in Washington, D.C. as an international economic advisor, where he focused on issues ranging from money laundering to Brady Plan debt reschedulings for Argentina and Brazil. Prior to that position, he worked as the Chief International Economist at Maryland National Bank. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Connecticut, M.A. in Far Eastern Studies from the University of Londonâs School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), and B.A. in both Political Science and History from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Dr. MacDonald has written 11 books, the most recent being A History of Credit and Power in the Western World (co-authored 2001) and Fast Forward: Latin America on the Edge of the 21st Century (1997, new edition in 1999), and New Tigers, Old Elephants: The Development Game in the 1990s and Beyond (co-authored 1996). One work in progress includes a textbook on international banking for Addison & Wesley (co-authored). He has also published numerous articles in such publications as Asian Survey, The Journal of Commerce, Society, Middle East Insight, and Foreign Policy.
